The Philosophy of NSPA

(NS) Nile Source

The Nile Source is physically and symbolically taken as the home and convergence of civilizations. It is the rallying point of various civilizations stretching to the Mediterranean Region which is also a crossroad of great civilizations. Nile Source Polytechnic is a vision for the exploration of great cultures, solidarity and larger communion.

(B) Butare

The town of Butare was founded in 1917 by the German administration. Historically, it is the town of the first university in the country, big schools and research institutions. Its name is an attractive reference to good studies and a strong concentration of intellectual and administrative resources needed for a successful teaching project.

(P) Polytechnic

Polytechnic schools are historically known for training engineers. Registration on merit, competitiveness, excellence and elitism are the main features of polytechnics, whose students and graduates are referred to as “Polytechnic graduates”. The emphasis is put on the mission of promoting scientific, technological and industrial innovation. Polytechnic graduates are historically renowned to be inventors and promoters of new technologies.

Polytechnic is formed from poly- « many » and techniques, symbolizing the variety of taught techniques. It combines the general theoretical training mainly of the mathematics of differential and integral calculation to be applied in public services in the fields of construction, design, economics, and social life.

The Polytechnic has a mission to transform :
- handicraft techniques to polished technologies; -theoretical sciences to designs and production technologies by technologically using each portion of science; -from science as discoveries and description to science as invention; - from the culture of predictability to planning; - design of high level comfort tools; - design of human and social spaces.

The word Polytechnic is underpinned by the new definition of the intellectual: an erudite (needed theoretical knowledge) producer (transfer of knowledge to life situation) or an erudite producer, well involved in the organization and able to occupy high qualification or responsibility positions of scientific, technical or economic nature in the public or private sectors and, more generally, in the whole set up of national activities.

(AA) Applied Arts

History of Education.

NSPA draws back very far in the history of education where the era of great civilizations is renowned for the acquisition of elaborate cultures distinguishes Liberal Arts or “Trivium” comprising grammar, rhetoric and logics from the “Qaudrivium” comprising arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music. Liberal arts were reserved for free people and were different from servants’ arts, crafts, techniques or mechanical arts reserved for the work force.

Integrated Programme.
Nile Source Polytechnic of Applied Arts is a rather integrated programme of Humanities, Sciences and Techniques.

Applied Arts (AA), Arts (A) refer to creation; Applied (A) refers to techniques for concrete productions. Applied Arts is therefore a programme melting pot for sciences, philosophy, humanities and languages, arts and crafts with the same shared spirit of conception, creation and production.
The aim is to assemble and develop in the same spirit, scientific, artistic and technical competences required in our human, enterprising and industrial societies.
A pedagogy of creativeness. NSPA is characterized by the pedagogical principle of creativeness which is cross cutting to all taught modules.

Creativeness in Arts awakens, mobilizes and expands all the intellectual capacities of an individual: the cognitive ones or operational and predicative intelligence able to anticipate and act in every situation; the conative ones for the assertion of one’s personality and emotional motivations which stimulate effort and pleasure in the effort.
It allows the student to discover, invent and create himself/herself as a human and to invent his life and realize it as a human.

Studies by project

NSPA gives prominence to teaching by project. Polytechnicians of the NSPA are constantly induced to conceive projects relating to their domains of study so that they deepen and transfer their theoretical knowledge, in order to discover their talents and develop their abilities for creativeness and professionalism.
New classroom set up

NSPA is a series of projection of the school, the student and the teacher in an imaginary future of life, production and enterprise made of by both autonomous and interpersonal humans, by tools and relations. Every class is set to that end, not as a space for face to face teaching, but one meant for learning together. In this pedagogy off creativeness, NSPA, as a school, is a focal point between knowledge, intelligence and life.
